ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Peterson Farms is a family operated production farm and provider of agricultural services based out of Loretto, KY. As a Hemp / Organic Farm Intern at Peterson Farms your primary responsibility will be to assist the Hemp / Organic team in tasks related to the production practices of organic hemp, row crops, and alfalfa at our Danville, KY farm. Responsibilities will include but are not limited to: – Maintenance and repair of equipment and operating facilities – Field equipment operation including use of on-board computing systems in equipment such as tractors, sprayers, etc. – Assisting with transplanting of hemp, planting of organic row crops, and in-season weed and pest control – Operation and maintenance of tape irrigation system and application of nutrients via fertigation – Crop scouting for growth staging as well as weed, insect, and disease identification – Collection of soil and tissue samples to help diagnosis crop fertility needs – Scouting fields of contract hemp growers – Various other on-farm duties as assigned Through an Internship with Peterson Farms you can expect to use our core values to gain a better understanding of the logistics and skills necessary to maintain quality and efficiency in a large hemp and organic operation.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
High school diploma or equivalent is required. Must be able to obtain a DOT medical card required for operation of equipment. Preferred candidates would be pursuing a degree in Agronomy or Plant and Soil Science, Agricultural Mechanics, Ag Economics, Ag Business, or other related fields, but it is not required.
PREFERRED SKILLS
Preferred candidates will have previous production agriculture experience whether it be through prior internships or on-farm experience. At minimum, candidates should have a basic knowledge of machinery operation. Good communication skills are a must. Most importantly, candidates need to have a drive to learn! Internship Period Summer internships usually begin late April to early May and usually last until around mid-August. Peterson Farms would be willing to discuss extension of the internship to encompass the fall semester.
